Biodiversity Offset Projects

Biodiversity Offset Projects

Landscape Conservation recognises that it can be extremely challenging balancing the needs of environmental conservation and the need for economic growth, especially in least developed nations.  One of the tools most widely adopted by responsible business to try and ensure that there is No Net Loss of biodiversity, is the use of mitigation hierarchy principles http://www.csbi.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/Mitigation-Hierarchy-Executive-summary-and-Overview.pdf .   The concept of No Net Loss of biodiversity is a fundamental idea to conserving biodiversity, so much so that the World Bank International Finance Corporation, which is the world's largest funder of infrastructure development in lower and middle income countries, has based its lending requirements on the commitment of the borrower to meet the IFC Performance Standards https://www.ifc.org/en/insights-reports/2012/ifc-performance-standards, when implementing large scale projects, with these PS being founded on the principles of mitigation hierarchy.

Whilst most corporates are familiar with the needs to conduct an Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) to identify the issues that need to be addressed when large-scale development takes place, designing and implementing a Biodiversity Offset Project (to IFS Performance Standards) is often where business do not have the experience, and need our services.

Landscape Conservation has expertise in both designing and then implementing Biodiversity Offset Projects for large-scale developments that are targeted to result in No Net Loss of biodiversity.  Our team has been involved in the largest BOP in the world, as an advisor and implementor with New Manila Airport Incorporated (NMAI), for the creation and averted loss of critical habitat for migratory birds in North Manila Bay.

If your company is interested in learning more about how Landscape Conservation can help in the design and implementation of Biodiversity Offset Projects to meet IFC Performance Standards, then please contact us.
